Mentors Are The Answer




		A small time commitment can have a big impact on a child's life. Research shows that a mentor in a child's life can increase his/her self-esteem, educational success, and decrease the effects of risk factors on the child's life such as the use of alcohol and illegal drugs, becoming involved in gangs and other violent activities, and/or becoming teen parents.

Surfing Events
Our Surfing Events are conducted at both Will Rogers State Beach under a permit granted by Los Angeles County and Encinitas Beach. Before the children arrive, we set up our day camp by a life guard tower. The canopy goes up and the soft boards, wetsuits, and rash guards are laid out. After a quick orientation for the new volunteers, we are ready to greet the children as they arrive.

Once the entire community has arrived for the day, we create a circle, make some introductions and announcements, and begin "surfing ground school". Children are introduced to the basics of the equipment, the surroundings, and the techniques for beginning surfing. We then match-up students with instructors for the day, and then proceed to the water for some individual instruction. We surf for 90 minutes and then break for lunch. After the break, we surf for another hour and circle up again to discuss the day. We then tear down the day camp and pack it away for the next event. The children go home smiling and exhilarated and the volunteers go home smiling and satisfied knowing they have made a difference in an important young life. Check out our events schedule here.

FREE Surf Instructor Certification
This summer you can become a Certified Surf Instructor. The requirements will be to take a CPR class, participate in 5 sessions this season, instruct one beach lesson and take a quiz at the end of the fifth session. Sound good, go for it!

FREE CPR Training
We are going to be offering CPR certifications for those becoming certified as an instructor. The cost is $50 (still a good deal) for anyone not in the certification program. It is good to be certified on the beach. Many of you would also benefit from it in your everyday lives. Some of you work with children or have children of your own. Most of our volunteers are outside adventure seekers, so whether you are out on a trail or in an airport, being prepared is always a good thing.

Background Check Policy
As our program grows, so does our responsibility to the kids we serve. This year will be requiring background checks:

Volunteers may attend two (2) events before background check are required.
The background check cost is $15 and it requires your full name, address, date of birth and social security number.
You can submit your background check, in two ways:
- Select "Volunteers" on the menu on the upper left
- Click-on "Logon to your existing profile"
- Enter your User Id and Password and select
- If you need help remembering your password, Click-on "Forgot your password?"
- Select "Profile" on the menu on the upper left
- Update your Full Name, Address, Date of Birth and Socal Security number
- After your update, select "Profile" on the menu on the upper left
- Make your $15 payment via PayPal (button is in the upper left, it says "Donate")
- You are done, check back in a few days and we will have removed the SSN
- Send us a letter with your Full Name, Address, Date of Birth and Socal Security number, include $15 check to Boarding House Mentors.
