Aloha Kakou,

It is estimated that 50% of high school age kids in Los Angeles drop out of school. However, over 70% of the kids enrolled in Youth Mentoring Connection, which Boarding House Mentors is a part of, complete high school and go on to college.

Most kids growing up in the center of Los Angeles know their “hood." Some of them know the larger city and its limits. We want them to know the world. Thus, this year we are sending two mentors along with their mentees to Hawai'i to experience the tradition of ALOHA.

ABOUT BHM

Our mission is simple: we introduce at-risk youth to the exhilaration of surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding in order to broaden their life experience and create positive social change. Since our first season in 2003, BHM has passed the stoke (the pure joy) of board-riding to over 2000 kids.

The ultimate goal of this trip is to expose the kids to the contagious Aloha Spirit and Culture, which honor tradition, respect, sharing, and love. In turn, the kids will then carry back that spirit to their own communities.
