The session in October at Topanga with Aaron was great! Long lined up waves, some overhead. What a blast! For November I chose to find waves and surfed Hazard Canyon under the full moon after sunset and before sunrise. Totally glassy, overhead waves! The waves and currents were pretty nuts yesterday so we kept the kids out of the water for the first part of the day with a relay race. The relay had many different components including a surfboard hurdle, run, and football toss. But my personal favorite was THE CORNDOG CHALLENGE! In this part of the relay, the kids had to run out into the water, get soaking wet, and then roll down the hill of wet sand to cover themselves in sand like the flour of a corn dog. It was pretty hilarious to watch. You can check out a video of it here:
BHM - The Corndog Challenge

After the relay we had a delicious sushi lunch by Sushi Chef Travis. He taught the kids about sushi, wasabi root, and the importance of taking care of the environment. After lunch the tide went down a bit and the advanced kids went out for a surf while the others played in the water. Then we closed out the summer with a special gift and donation from our friends at Volcom. They recently held a "RECYCLE YOUR BOARDSHORTS" drive at retail stores across the nation. Volcom graciously chose Boarding House Mentors as one of the recipients of these board shorts.

As we closed out the summer, the kids were given a pair of recycled board shorts and a group photo from the summer. Many thanks to our volunteers, mentors, and the BHM Board of Directors for a memorable summer. See you all next year!

-Lindsay

Surf Session #4

August 10th I attended my first Boarding House Mentors event at Will Rogers Beach, it was a blast indeed! I had the privilege of taking pictures of the participants all day long. It started off with a game of volleyball, then an initiation for the newcomers and a surf session with all the mentors, volunteers and kids. I had a great time seeing all the kids facial reactions and enthusiasm while riding the waves. We then ate a yummy lunch and closed with a talk, with well known Surfer Keith Malloy. Throughout the day, all of the youth had a grand time, tons of smiles, laughter and of course fun surfing waves. I’m looking forward to the next Boarding House Mentors session on August 23rd. See you in the water!

Cheers,
Michelle Rozzen

P.S. With safety being a key priority, we started off the day with opening circle and asking the youth if they noticed anything different about the beach today. They all commented on how the waves were way bigger than normal! We talked about the swell, rip currents, and staying safe in these conditions by only going in waist high water. We then broke off into small groups based on what month you were born. We asked each group to talk about how you know when someone is listening to them. Key factors were eye contact and asking questions.

After initiation, we went to our small surf groups and did a beach cleanup.
